We suggest that the phenomenon of regression remains elusive because it is incompatible with the belief that the predicted outcome should be maximally representative of the input, and, hence, that the value of the outcome variable should be as extreme as the value of the input variable.

Regression to the mean explained. Regression to the mean is a statistical phenomenon where extreme values tend to be followed by values closer to the average. This occurs because extreme values are often due to chance factors that are unlikely to persist.

Misinterpretations of regression. People often fail to recognize regression to the mean and instead invent spurious causal explanations for it. For example, instructors may believe that praise for a good performance is followed by a poorer performance because the praise itself was detrimental.

Consequences of misunderstanding regression. The failure to understand regression can lead to overestimating the effectiveness of punishment and underestimating the effectiveness of reward. In social interaction, as well as in training, rewards are typically administered when performance is good, and punishments are typically administered when performance is poor.

A better understanding of these heuristics and of the biases to which they lead could improve judgments and decisions in situations of uncertainty.
