Key Takeaways

1. Love begins at home and spreads outward

"Love begins at home, and every Co-worker should try to make sure that deep family love abides in his or her home."

Foundation of love. Mother Teresa emphasizes that genuine love must start within our own families and homes. This love forms the foundation for all other acts of charity and compassion in the world. By nurturing love in our closest relationships, we develop the capacity to extend that love to others, including strangers and those in need.

Ripple effect. The love cultivated at home has a ripple effect, spreading outward to neighbors, communities, and eventually the world at large. Mother Teresa encourages us to focus on creating a loving environment in our immediate surroundings, as this becomes the wellspring from which we can draw to serve others. By prioritizing love within our families, we build the strength and compassion needed to tackle larger societal issues.

2. Prayer and silence are essential for spiritual growth

"In the silence of the heart God speaks. If you face God in prayer and silence, God will speak to you."

Inner stillness. Mother Teresa emphasizes the importance of cultivating inner stillness through prayer and silence. This practice allows us to connect with God and hear His guidance. By creating space for quietude in our lives, we open ourselves to divine wisdom and inspiration.

Spiritual nourishment. Regular prayer and periods of silence serve as spiritual nourishment, strengthening our faith and deepening our relationship with God. Mother Teresa encourages:

  • Daily meditation and reflection
  • Listening for God's voice in moments of quiet
  • Using prayer as a means to center oneself amidst life's challenges
  • Cultivating a habit of mindfulness and presence

3. Embrace poverty to serve the poorest of the poor

"Poverty is freedom. It is a freedom so that what I possess doesn't own me, so that what I possess doesn't hold me down, so that my possessions don't keep me from sharing or giving of myself."

Voluntary simplicity. Mother Teresa advocates for embracing poverty as a means to serve others more fully. By letting go of material possessions and attachments, we free ourselves to focus on the needs of those around us. This voluntary simplicity allows us to relate more authentically to the poor and marginalized.

Radical generosity. Embracing poverty enables a lifestyle of radical generosity. When we have less, we are more inclined to share what we do have. Mother Teresa's approach includes:

  • Living with only the essentials
  • Sharing resources freely with those in need
  • Finding joy in giving rather than accumulating
  • Trusting in God's providence rather than material security

4. See Jesus in every person, especially the suffering

"Jesus is the Word made flesh. Jesus is the Bread of Life. Jesus is the Victim offered for our sins on the cross. Jesus is the sacrifice offered at holy Mass for the sins of the world and for mine."

Divine presence. Mother Teresa teaches us to recognize the presence of Jesus in every person we encounter, particularly those who are suffering or marginalized. This perspective transforms our interactions, imbuing them with reverence and compassion.

Serving the divine. By seeing Jesus in others, our acts of service become sacred. Mother Teresa encourages us to:

  • Treat each person with dignity and respect
  • Offer comfort and care to the sick and dying
  • Reach out to the lonely and forgotten
  • Serve others as if we were serving Jesus himself

5. Small acts of love have immense power

"Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love."

Power of kindness. Mother Teresa emphasizes that even the smallest acts of love and kindness can have a profound impact. She teaches that it's not the scale of our actions that matters, but the love with which we perform them.

Everyday opportunities. We can transform the world through simple, everyday acts of love:

  • Offering a smile to a stranger
  • Listening attentively to someone in need
  • Sharing a meal with the hungry
  • Comforting the sick or lonely
  • Performing small tasks with great care and attention

6. Forgiveness and humility are transformative

"If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other."

Power of forgiveness. Mother Teresa teaches that forgiveness is essential for personal peace and societal harmony. By letting go of grudges and resentments, we free ourselves and others from the burden of past hurts.

Cultivating humility. Humility allows us to see our own faults and forgive others more easily. Mother Teresa encourages:

  • Acknowledging our own shortcomings
  • Seeking forgiveness when we've wronged others
  • Practicing empathy and understanding
  • Letting go of pride and self-importance
  • Serving others without seeking recognition

7. Service to others is the path to true happiness

"The fruit of love is service. Love leads us to say, 'I want to serve.' And the fruit of service is peace."

Joy in giving. Mother Teresa teaches that true happiness comes from serving others. By focusing on the needs of those around us, we transcend our own troubles and find purpose and fulfillment.

Selfless service. The path to joy through service involves:

  • Putting others' needs before our own
  • Finding ways to contribute to our communities
  • Using our talents and skills to help those in need
  • Cultivating a spirit of generosity and compassion
  • Seeking opportunities to make a positive difference in the world

8. Faith in action is more powerful than words

"If you judge people, you have no time to love them."

Living testimony. Mother Teresa emphasizes that our actions speak louder than our words when it comes to faith. By living out our beliefs through concrete acts of love and service, we become powerful witnesses to God's love.

Practical faith. Putting faith into action involves:

  • Responding to the needs of those around us
  • Showing compassion without judgment
  • Living out religious teachings in daily life
  • Allowing our actions to inspire others
  • Focusing on doing good rather than preaching

9. Family and children are precious gifts from God

"I will take any child, any time, night or day. Just let me know and I will come for him."

Sanctity of life. Mother Teresa emphasizes the preciousness of every human life, especially children. She advocates for the protection and nurturing of all children, born and unborn.

Family as foundation. The family unit is seen as crucial for societal well-being:

  • Nurturing love and values within the family
  • Prioritizing time with children and spouse
  • Creating a supportive home environment
  • Recognizing the unique gifts of each family member
  • Extending the concept of family to include those in need

10. Death with dignity is a fundamental human right

"A beautiful death is for people who lived like animals to die like angels - loved and wanted."

Compassionate care. Mother Teresa emphasizes the importance of providing compassionate care to the dying, ensuring that every person experiences love and dignity in their final moments.

Holistic approach. Caring for the dying involves:

  • Addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs
  • Providing comfort and pain relief
  • Offering companionship and emotional support
  • Respecting cultural and religious beliefs
  • Ensuring that no one dies alone or feeling unloved

About the Author

Mother Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu, born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910, was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, a congregation that grew to over 4,500 nuns active in 133 countries by 2012. The organization manages homes for those with HIV/AIDS, leprosy, and tuberculosis, as well as soup kitchens, clinics, counseling programs, orphanages, and schools. Members take vows of chastity, poverty, obedience, and service to the poorest. Mother Teresa's work earned her beatification by Pope John Paul II and canonization by Pope Francis, making her Saint Teresa of Calcutta in the Catholic Church.
