Alexander Baron (1917–1999) was a British author and screenwriter raised in Hackney, London, the son of a Polish-Jewish immigrant.
Politically active in his youth, he campaigned against fascism before serving in WWII, experiencing combat in Sicily, Italy, Normandy, and Northern France.
His wartime experiences inspired three bestselling war novels, beginning with From the City from the Plough (1948).
Baron later became a prolific television writer, contributing to BBC dramas including Poldark and adaptations of Jane Eyre and Sense and Sensibility.
His London novels, deeply rooted in personal experience, are increasingly celebrated by new generations of readers.
