Carey McWilliams was a historian, lawyer, and writer born in Colorado.
Originally published in 1948, his most celebrated work was the first to document the ethnic history of Spanish-speaking people in the United States.
Beyond writing, McWilliams actively engaged in civil rights causes, notably defending those wrongly accused during the Sleepy Lagoon incident and amid the Zoot Suit Riots of the early 1940s.
His activism led to him being branded a communist and called before the House Un-American Activities Committee.
He is the father of political scientist Wilson Carey McWilliams.
