Born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland in 1941, he studied English at University College London before pursuing an academic career in linguistics at Bangor and Reading universities.
Renowned for research in intonation, stylistics, and applied linguistics, he has authored approximately 100 books since 1964.
His work spans religious, educational, and clinical contexts, including developing linguistic profiling techniques.
He held a chair at the University of Reading and is now Honorary Professor of Linguistics at the University of Wales, Bangor.
