David Henry Hwang (黃哲倫; Huáng Zhélún), born August 11, 1957, in Los Angeles, is America's preeminent Asian American dramatist.
Educated at Stanford University and Yale School of Drama, he studied with Sam Shepard and María Irene Fornés.
His celebrated works include M. Butterfly (1988 Tony Award winner, Pulitzer finalist), Yellow Face (2008 OBIE Award, Pulitzer finalist), and Golden Child (1998 Tony nomination).
He has written Broadway musicals including the Flower Drum Song revival and opera libretti for Philip Glass and other composers.
President Clinton appointed him to the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities.
