Edward Eager was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, later attending Harvard University, graduating in 1935.
He relocated to New York City before eventually settling in Connecticut.
Married to Jane Eberly, he had one son, Fritz.
A devoted childhood fan of L. Frank Baum's Oz series, Eager began writing children's books when he struggled to find suitable stories to read to Fritz.
Deeply influenced by E. Nesbit, whom he considered the greatest children's author ever, he consistently acknowledged her impact in his work.
A accomplished lyricist and playwright, Eager died in 1964 at fifty-three.
