Gerald Malcolm Durrell was born in India in 1925 and developed a lifelong passion for wildlife during his family's years on Corfu.
He channeled these formative experiences into a beloved trilogy, beginning with My Family and Other Animals.
After working as a keeper at Whipsnade Park, he organized animal-collecting expeditions across multiple continents, documenting his adventures in numerous books.
A dedicated conservationist, he founded the Jersey Zoological Park in 1958 and later the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust.
Married twice, Durrell wrote with exuberance, passion, and acute observation until his death in 1995.
