Gottfried von Strassburg, who died around 1210, was a medieval German poet best known for his courtly romance Tristan, an adaptation of the 12th-century Tristan and Iseult legend.
His unfinished masterpiece is considered one of the greatest narrative works of the German Middle Ages, ranked alongside the Nibelungenlied and Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival.
Beyond his major romance, Gottfried is believed to have composed several surviving lyrics.
His profound influence extended into the 19th century, inspiring Richard Wagner's celebrated opera Tristan und Isolde in 1865.
