Humberto Maturana was a Chilean biologist widely regarded as a key figure in second-order cybernetics, alongside theorists such as Heinz von Foerster, Gordon Pask, Herbert Brün, and Ernst von Glasersfeld.
Together with Francisco Varela and Ricardo B. Uribe, he co-created the concept of "autopoiesis," describing the self-generating and self-maintaining structures found in living systems.
He also developed ideas including structural determinism and structural coupling.
His influential body of work spans multiple disciplines, with particular impact on systems thinking and cybernetics, and remains fundamentally concerned with exploring the biology of cognition.
