Kenn Kaufman, born in 1954 in South Bend, Indiana, began birding at age six and developed a deep passion for birds after his family relocated to Wichita, Kansas.
Inspired by Roger Tory Peterson, he famously dropped out of high school at sixteen to hitchhike across North America chasing birds, an experience immortalized in his memoir.
He later led nature tours globally before transitioning to writing, editing, and illustrating.
A prolific author of field guides and nature books, Kaufman is a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society and the only person to receive the American Birding Association's lifetime achievement award twice.
