María Dueñas Vinuesa was born in 1964 in Puertollano, Spain, one of eight siblings.
She is a professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Murcia and has taught at various North American universities.
An accomplished academic author, Dueñas achieved international acclaim with her 2009 debut novel, which sold over a million copies in Spain and has been translated into more than 25 languages.
The historical espionage novel became a massive bestseller throughout Europe.
She is married to Manuel Ballesteros, also a professor, and they have two children.
The family resides in Cartagena, Spain.
