Patrick Johnstone grew up in England and converted to Christianity in 1959 while studying chemistry at Bristol University.
Inspired to become a missionary evangelist, he moved to South Africa in 1962 for theological training.
He married Jill Amsden in 1968 and served in Kenya, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, learning multiple African languages.
While on the mission field, he began compiling Operation World, first published in 1965 as a 30-page booklet.
Over 2.5 million copies have been distributed in seven editions and 16 languages.
Johnstone later joined WEC International's leadership, focusing on strategy and research, and contributed to the Lausanne Movement and AD2000 Movement.
