Philippe Besson began his literary career in 1999 while working as a jurist, inspired by WWI servicemen's accounts to write his debut novel, In the Absence of Men, which won the Emmanuel-Roblès prize.
His second novel, L'Arrière-saison (2002), earned the Grand Prix RTL-Lire 2003, and Un garçon d'Italie received nominations for France's prestigious Goncourt and Médicis prizes.
Following this success, Besson dedicated himself exclusively to writing.
His work is characterized by fluid, sensitive prose exploring themes of absence, loss, grief, and human emotions with simplicity and subtlety.
