Trudi Canavan was born in Melbourne, Australia, and began her writing career winning the 1999 Aurealis Award for Best Fantasy Short Story.
Her debut novel was published in 2001, launching the Black Magician Trilogy, which became the most successful debut fantasy series of its decade according to Nielsen BookScan.
Her second trilogy also achieved bestselling success, with one entry reaching No.3 on the Sunday Times hardback fiction list.
In 2006, she signed a seven-figure contract to write a prequel and sequel to her original trilogy, with the prequel later winning the Aurealis Award for Best Fantasy Novel.
