Adolfo Vicente Perfecto Bioy Casares was born in Buenos Aires in 1914 to wealthy parents.
He began writing in the early 1930s, contributing to the influential magazine Sur, where he met his wife, painter and writer Silvina Ocampo, and his lifelong mentor and collaborator Jorge Luis Borges.
Published in 1940, The Invention of Morel was his breakthrough work, marking the arrival of his signature uncanny and darkly humorous voice.
He went on to write numerous novels and stories, including A Plan for Escape and Asleep in the Sun, and co-authored satirical works with Borges under the pseudonym H. Bustos Domecq.
He died in 1999.
