Allan David Bloom was an American philosopher and academic known for his advocacy of Great Books education.
Born in 1930, he studied under Leo Strauss and became a professor at the University of Chicago.
Bloom's bestselling 1987 book, The Closing of the American Mind, catapulted him to fame with its critique of contemporary higher education and American culture.
He argued for a return to classical texts and rigorous intellectual inquiry, criticizing what he saw as the erosion of critical thinking and moral standards in universities.
Bloom's work influenced debates on education and cultural values until his death in 1992.
