Carter Godwin Woodson was an American historian, author, and educator who pioneered the study of African American history.
He founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915 and launched the Journal of Negro History in 1916.
Woodson is known as the "father of black history" for his efforts to promote African American history education.
In 1926, he initiated Negro History Week, which later evolved into Black History Month.
Woodson's work aimed to combat racism through education and increase recognition of African American contributions to history.
He wrote several influential books and established the oldest African American publishing company in the United States.
