Born in 1952, he graduated from Yale University and worked as a merchant marine before becoming managing editor of Esquire magazine.
Buckley later served as chief speechwriter for Vice President George H.W. Bush.
He has authored numerous bestselling books, including "Thank You for Smoking" and "Boomsday," and has contributed over 60 comic essays to The New Yorker.
