He is best known for his military science fiction, particularly the Honor Harrington series set in the "Honorverse." Weber frequently features strong female protagonists in traditionally male roles.

The Honor Harrington character, inspired by Horatio Hornblower, has been developed through numerous novels and anthologies.

He donated his archive to Northern Illinois University in 2008.
