Major Richard "Dick" D. Winters commanded Company E, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division during World War II. He parachuted into Normandy on D-Day and fought across Europe, eventually commanding the 2nd Battalion.
After the war, Winters briefly served during the Korean War before returning to civilian life.
He gained widespread recognition through the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, in which he was portrayed by Damian Lewis.
Winters became a frequent lecturer at West Point and was featured in several books about Easy Company.
He retired in 1997 and was the last surviving Easy Company commander when he passed away.
