Elisabeth Elliot was born to missionary parents in Belgium and grew up in the United States.
She studied classical Greek at Wheaton College, which later aided her work with unwritten languages.
Elliot served as a missionary in Ecuador, where she married Jim Elliot.
After Jim's death at the hands of the Auca tribe, she continued working with indigenous groups, including living with the Aucas for two years.
Returning to the U.S. in 1963, Elliot became an author and speaker.
She remarried twice, first to Addison Leitch and later to Lars Gren, with whom she continued her work.
