Humphrey William Bouverie Carpenter was an English biographer, writer, and radio broadcaster known for his literary biographies, particularly those of J.R.R. Tolkien and other members of the Inklings.
Born in 1946, Carpenter studied English at Keble College, Oxford.
He began his career in radio before turning to writing.
His biography of Tolkien, published in 1977, was authorized by the Tolkien estate and is considered a definitive work.
Carpenter's meticulous research and engaging writing style earned him acclaim, and he went on to write biographies of other notable figures like W.H. Auden and Ezra Pound.
He won a Mythopoeic Award for his book The Inklings in 1982.
