Kate Larimore Turabian (1893-1987) was the University of Chicago's graduate school dissertation secretary from 1930 to 1958.
Despite lacking formal higher education due to illness, she developed a pamphlet on dissertation formatting that evolved into the widely-used "A Manual for Writers." Turabian was known for her exactitude and erudition, earning respect from scholars despite her lack of academic credentials.
She also authored "The Student's Guide for Writing College Papers." After retiring, she moved to California with her husband Stephen.
Turabian's work became an indispensable resource for students and researchers, with her manual selling over nine million copies across eight editions.
