Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1965.
His family moved to Iran, then back to Kabul, before seeking asylum in the United States in 1980 due to political turmoil in Afghanistan.
Hosseini graduated from medical school and practiced medicine for over a decade before becoming a full-time writer after the success of The Kite Runner.
He is a Goodwill Envoy for the UN Refugee Agency and founded the Khaled Hosseini Foundation to provide humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan.
Hosseini lives in Northern California with his wife and two children, continuing his work as an author and humanitarian.
