Marlen Haushofer was an Austrian author born in 1920.
She studied German Language and Literature in Vienna and Graz.
Haushofer married, divorced, and remarried dentist Manfred Haushofer, with whom she had two sons.
Although she won literary prizes, she remained relatively unknown until the Women's Movement rediscovered her work, particularly for its themes of women in male-dominated society.
Her most famous novel, Die Wand (The Wall), was published in 1963 and is considered her masterpiece.
It tells the story of a woman surviving alone in the woods, cut off from society.
Haushofer died of bone cancer in 1970 at the age of 49.
