Michael David Wood is an English historian and broadcaster born in Moston, Manchester, and educated at Manchester Grammar School and Oriel College, Oxford, specializing in Anglo-Saxon history.
In the 1970s, he worked for the BBC in Manchester as a reporter and assistant producer on current affairs programs.
He returned to history programming with his 1981 BBC2 series "In Search of the Dark Ages," which explored leaders including Boudica, King Arthur, Offa, Alfred the Great, and William the Conqueror.
This series inspired his first book of the same name and launched his career presenting numerous television documentary series.
