Mikhail Nekhemyevich Tal was a Soviet Latvian chess player who became the eighth World Chess Champion.
Born in 1936 in Riga, Latvia, Tal was known for his aggressive and sacrificial playing style, earning him the nickname "The Magician from Riga." He became a Grandmaster in 1957 and won the World Championship in 1960 at the age of 23, making him the youngest champion at that time.
Tal's reign was short-lived, losing the title in 1961, but he remained a top player for many years.
Despite ongoing health issues, he continued to compete at a high level until his death in 1992.
Tal was also a skilled writer and journalist, contributing to his legendary status in chess history.
