Natsuo Kirino was born in 1951 in Kanazawa, Japan, and raised between two brothers.
Her architect father moved the family frequently before settling in Tokyo when she was fourteen.
After earning a law degree, Kirino worked in film scheduling and magazine editing.
She married at twenty-four and began writing professionally at thirty after her daughter's birth, though her major debut came at forty-one.
She has since written thirteen novels and three short story collections, acclaimed for intelligent plotting and unique perspectives on post-bubble Japanese society.
Her breakthrough novel OUT became her first English translation and earned an Edgar Allan Poe Award nomination in 2004, making her the first Japanese nominee.
