Patrick O'Brian was a renowned British author best known for his Aubrey-Maturin series of historical novels set during the Napoleonic Wars.
The 20-volume series, centered on the friendship between naval officer Jack Aubrey and physician Stephen Maturin, has been widely acclaimed for its historical accuracy and literary merit.
O'Brian's work has been compared to Jane Austen and described as "the best historical novels ever written." Beyond the Aubrey-Maturin series, O'Brian wrote other novels, biographies, and translated works from French to English.
The tenth book in the series, The Far Side of the World, was adapted into an Oscar-nominated film in 2003.
