Nelle Harper Lee was an American novelist best known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
Born and raised in Monroeville, Alabama, Lee drew inspiration from her observations of local life and events.
She assisted her friend Truman Capote with research for In Cold Blood.
Lee's second novel, Go Set a Watchman, was published in 2015 but was actually an earlier draft of Mockingbird.
Her work explored themes of racism, class, and justice in the Deep South.
Lee received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007 for her contributions to literature.
