Robert Owen Paxton is an American political scientist and historian specializing in Vichy France, fascism, and World War II-era Europe.
He earned degrees from Washington and Lee University, Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and Harvard University.
Paxton taught at UC Berkeley and SUNY Stony Brook before joining Columbia University in 1969, where he spent most of his career until retiring in 1997.
He remains a professor emeritus and has contributed numerous reviews to The New York Review of Books.
Paxton's expertise in fascism and European history has made him a respected authority in his field.
