Ruby Wax arrived in Britain in 1977 pursuing an acting career, later finding her niche in comedy alongside French and Saunders.
Her brash, forthright interviewing style brought considerable popularity, leading to her own chat show.
In 2002, her memoir How Do You Want Me? became a bestseller.
Her 2010 stand-up show Losing It addressed her bipolar disorder, and she founded mental health community Black Dog Tribe in 2011.
In 2013, she graduated from Oxford University with a master's degree in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.
Today, she campaigns actively for mental health awareness and destigmatisation.
