Samuel Dickson Selvon was a Trinidadian-born author known for his novels about West Indian immigrants in London.
Born to East Indian parents, he worked as a wireless operator and journalist before moving to London in the 1950s.
Selvon's most famous works include The Lonely Londoners and Moses Ascending.
He pioneered the use of Caribbean dialect in literature, capturing the immigrant experience with humor and poignancy.
Later in life, Selvon moved to Canada, where he taught creative writing and worked briefly as a janitor.
His papers are now housed at the University of Texas, Austin.
