Samuel Shem, born Stephen Joseph Bergman in 1944, is an American psychiatrist and author.
He is best known for his novel The House of God, a fictionalized account of medical internship based on his experiences at Beth Israel Hospital.
Shem also wrote Mount Misery, another book about medical training.
He studied at Harvard and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford.
Currently, he is a faculty member at New York University School of Medicine.
Shem has also written plays, including "Bill W. and Dr. Bob," which had an Off-Broadway run.
His work often explores the challenges and ethical dilemmas faced by medical professionals during their training and careers.
