Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1965.
His family moved to Iran in 1970, then back to Kabul in 1973.
In 1976, they relocated to Paris, later seeking asylum in the United States in 1980 due to political unrest in Afghanistan.
Hosseini graduated from high school in San Jose, California, and earned a biology degree from Santa Clara University.
He obtained his M.D. from UC San Diego and practiced medicine for over a decade.
Hosseini is now a Goodwill Envoy for UNHCR and runs a foundation providing humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan.
He lives in Northern California with his wife and two children.
