Sol Yurick was an American novelist born to politically active Jewish immigrants.
He served in World War II as a surgical technician and later studied literature at New York University.
Yurick worked as a social investigator for the welfare department before becoming a full-time writer in the 1960s.
His first novel, The Warriors, published in 1965, combined Greek mythology with New York City gang culture and inspired a popular film adaptation.
Yurick's other works explored various themes and genres.
He was involved in political activism, including the anti-war movement.
Yurick continued writing until his death at age 87 from lung cancer complications.
