Sonoko Machida is a Japanese author born in 1980 in Fukuoka, Japan.
She began her writing career in 2016 with the short story "Cameroon no aoi sakana" (Blue Fish in Cameroon), which earned her the R-18 Prize from Shinchosha Publishing.
Her debut novel, "52 Hertz no kujira tachi" (The 52-Hertz Whales), was published in April 2020 and won the Japan Booksellers' Award in 2021.
Machida's work has gained popularity in Japan and has been translated into multiple languages, including English and Thai.
