Stefan Żeromski (1864-1925) was a prominent Polish novelist and dramatist known as the "conscience of Polish literature." Born near Kielce, he worked as a librarian at the Polish National Museum in Rapperswil, Switzerland from 1892-96.
His notable works include The Spring to Come, The Labors of Sisyphus (about Tsarist Russification of Poland), Ashes, and The Faithful River.
Several novels were adapted to film by directors like Andrzej Wajda.
Żeromski was shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in 1924 and granted an apartment at Warsaw's Royal Castle for his literary achievements.
