Francis Edward Wintle, writing as Edward Rutherfurd, was born in Salisbury, England.
After studying at Cambridge and Stanford universities and working in political research and publishing, he abandoned his career in 1983 to write.
His debut novel Sarum (1987) became an international bestseller, spending 23 weeks on the New York Times list.
He has since published five more bestsellers including Russka, London, and two novels about Ireland.
His books, translated into twenty languages, span centuries of history.
Rutherfurd has lived in London, New York, New Hampshire, and Ireland, currently dividing time between New England and Europe with his two children.
