Gish Jen grew up in New York, speaking more Yiddish than Chinese.
She has received numerous prestigious awards including a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, Guggenheim fellowship, Fulbright fellowship, Lannan Literary Prize, and Harold and Mildred Strauss Living Award.
Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009, she has been featured in PBS American Masters programs and published in the New Yorker.
John Updike selected her work for The Best American Short Stories of The Century.
Her book Tiger Writing originated from the Massey Lectures in the History of American Civilization she delivered at Harvard University in 2012.
