Hans Urs von Balthasar was a Swiss Catholic theologian and priest, born in Lucerne in 1905.
He earned a doctorate in German literature before joining the Jesuits in 1929 and being ordained in 1936.
After leaving the Jesuits in 1950, he founded a Secular Institute and later joined the diocese of Chur.
Nominated as cardinal by Pope John Paul II, he died two days before the ceremony in 1988.
Considered one of the 20th century's greatest theologians, he resisted modern reductionism, engaging deeply with thinkers like Karl Barth while maintaining a distinctly eclectic, aesthetically rich theological vision.
