James B. Stockdale was a United States Navy vice admiral and one of the most decorated officers in American military history.
After leading aerial attacks during the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin Incident, he was shot down over North Vietnam in 1965 and held as the highest-ranking naval POW for over seven years.
During captivity, he organized fellow prisoners and endured extensive torture, earning the Medal of Honor for his leadership and resistance.
He later served as President of the Naval War College in the late 1970s and ran as Ross Perot's vice presidential candidate in 1992.
He died in 2005.
