Jessica Johns is a nehiyaw (Cree)-English-Irish writer and aunty, and a proud member of Sucker Creek First Nation in Northern Alberta, Canada.
As an Indigenous Canadian author, she brings an authentic ownvoices perspective to her writing, deeply rooted in Cree culture, traditions, and storytelling.
Her debut novel grew from her MFA thesis, where she intentionally challenged colonial Western storytelling conventions, particularly regarding the cultural significance of dreams in Cree heritage.
Johns is celebrated as an emerging voice in Indigenous literature, blending supernatural elements with deeply personal explorations of grief, family, and cultural identity.
