Kingsley William Amis was a prolific British novelist, poet, and critic who authored over twenty-three works, including short stories, radio scripts, and literary criticism.
Born in London, he attended the City of London School before studying English at St John's College, Oxford, where he forged a lifelong friendship with Philip Larkin.
His studies were interrupted by World War II service as a lieutenant in the Royal Corps of Signals.
After earning a first-class degree in 1947, he pursued writing full-time.
He is also the father of celebrated novelist Martin Amis and wrote under the pen names Robert Markham and William Bill Tanner.
