Bishop James Edward Lesslie Newbigin was a British theologian, missiologist, missionary, and prolific author who significantly shaped modern Christian thought.
Originally ordained in the Church of Scotland, he spent much of his career as a missionary in India, becoming one of the first bishops of the Church of South India.
His extensive writings covered theology, missiology, and ecclesiology, with particular influence on ecumenical dialogue and the Gospel and Our Culture movement.
Scholars credit him with laying foundations for the contemporary missional church movement, and his intellectual contributions are compared to the Church Fathers in stature and range.
