Mariama Bâ (1929–1981) was a groundbreaking Senegalese author, feminist, and teacher who wrote in French.
Born in Dakar and raised Muslim by traditional grandparents who initially opposed educating girls, she fought for equal rights throughout her life.
She married a Senegalese parliamentarian but later divorced him, raising their nine children alone.
Her debut novel won the first Noma Prize for Publishing in Africa in 1980 and is considered among Africa's most important literary works.
Bâ died in 1981 before her second novel was published, leaving behind a transformative legacy for African women's literature.
