Richard Baxter (1615-1691) was a prolific English Puritan church leader, theologian, poet, and writer known as "Scribbling Dick" for his extensive output of over 140 books.
Born in Rowton, Shropshire, he became most renowned for his ministry at St Mary and All Saint's Church in Kidderminster (1647-1661), where he wrote The Reformed Pastor in 1656.
Influenced by William Perkins and Richard Sibbes, Baxter served briefly as a parliamentary army chaplain during the Civil War.
Following the 1662 Act of Uniformity and Great Ejection, he married and retired to Middlesex, becoming an influential nonconformist leader who spent time in prison.
J.I. Packer described him as Puritanism's most outstanding pastor and writer on practical themes.
