Simonetta Agnello Hornby was born in Palermo, Sicily in 1945 and later obtained British citizenship.
She left Sicily at 21 to marry in England after studying English at Cambridge.
She returned to Sicily to complete a law degree, then spent a year in America on a Fulbright grant furthering her studies.
She eventually settled in London in 1972 with her English husband, whom she had met at Cambridge, and they had two children together.
Besides her career as a writer, she has pursued law and currently serves as President of the Special Education Needs and Disabilities Court in the UK.
