Gaius Julius Caesar (100-44 BC) was a Roman statesman, general, and historian who authored notable Latin prose, including military commentaries.
Caesar formed the first triumvirate with Pompey and Crassus in 60 BC, conquered Gaul by 51 BC, extending Roman territory to the English Channel and Rhine, and invaded Britain in 55 BC. After crossing the Rubicon in 49 BC, he won a civil war and became dictator.
He implemented social reforms, including calendar creation and bureaucratic centralization.
Despite his military genius and oratorical skill praised even by Cicero, senators fearing monarchy assassinated him on March 15, 44 BC. His grandnephew Octavian became Augustus, establishing the Roman Empire.
